Human flourishing can be defined as a state of well-being in which an individual or community experiences mental, emotional, and physical health. Human flourishing also can be defined as the realization of one’s potential, the pursuit of happiness, and essentially the ability to pursue the full range of goals that make for a good life.

Human flourishing is not only about having access to food and water, but it’s also about having access to a safe home and school, gaining an education, raising healthy children, experiencing meaningful work, and being able to participate in your community. It also means living in societies where you’re valued just as much as others. Generally speaking, human flourishing is about being able to live a life that is worth living.

What is compassionate innovation?

The idea of compassionate innovation really took off in the early 2000s and has been gaining momentum ever since. In recent years, the term “compassionate innovation” has emerged as a new way of thinking about how to design and develop products and services. Unlike traditional approaches that focus on increasing profits, compassionate innovation is about designing for the good of all stakeholders. Compassionate innovation is about creating products and services for human flourishing.

When you think about it, it makes sense that compassion should be at the core of what we do every day. There’s no point in innovating without considering the consequences and impact on people, including customers, employees, partners, and society at large. When you take these factors into consideration before developing a product or service—rather than afterward—the result can be significantly more positive for everyone involved.

The importance of compassionate innovation

Compassionate innovation is important for a number of reasons.  For one, it’s good business from an economic perspective. It has been shown that employees are more satisfied and engaged in their work when they work for a company with a strong moral compass. This leads to higher overall productivity and better performance on the bottom line—which means that compassion can actually be profitable.

A second reason is how it can change the world for the better. Compassionate innovations can lead to products and services that positively impact society—like alleviating poverty or curing disease.  Finally, compassionate innovation is often intrinsically rewarding: the act of designing products and services with care and thoughtfulness can be personally satisfying because it requires empathy and creativity just like any other art form.


Compassionate innovation is not just a buzzword. It is a movement, and it has the potential to make the world a better place. So, what does it really mean to innovate with compassion?

Compassionate innovation is about designing products, services, and social systems that are humane, inclusive, and equitable. It’s about making sure that everyone has the opportunity to flourish, no matter where they live, what nationality they are, who they love, or how much money they make.

It’s not just about making your products more environmentally friendly or paying employees a fair wage. It’s about designing your products, services, and social systems with a deep understanding of human needs and human nature.

It’s about finding ways to empower people to take control of their own lives and create their own opportunities.

It’s about designing innovations that reflect our shared humanity—innovations that show compassion to all people and the planet.
